How to Prepare for Your Mobile Spray Tan

Exfoliate 24 hours out, skip lotion and makeup the day of — here's the rest, and why it actually matters.

Before Your Appointment

How soon should I exfoliate?

24 hours before — not the same day. Skip oil-based scrubs and moisturizers; they leave a residue the solution won't stick to.

When should I wax or shave?

At least 28 hours before your appointment. Fresh hair removal opens your pores, and color settles unevenly in them if they haven't closed back up.

Can I get a facial or massage first?

Yes — but the day before, never the same day. Tanning should always be the last beauty treatment on your schedule. Facials, manicures, pedicures, and massages all use products that leave a barrier your tan can't get through.

What should I skip the day of?

Moisturizer, oil, deodorant, perfume, and makeup. All of them create a barrier on the skin the tan won't adhere to.

Do I need to shower before my appointment?

No — showering isn't required. If you do, finish at least 6 hours before your appointment so your skin's pH has time to neutralize. Closer than that, end it with cold water instead of warm.

Does the soap I use matter?

It does. Bar soap and cream-based body washes — Dove especially — leave a film that blocks the solution and can cause streaking. Gel-based body wash is the one that won't work against you.

What to wear

Dark, Loose, Open-Toe

Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing and open-toe sandals to your appointment. Solution can transfer to fabric on the way home, but it's water-soluble — it washes out.

Take off everything you can before the tan goes on. A client once asked to keep her socks on during the appointment — she spent the next week with two pale, sock-shaped patches on her feet that no amount of moisturizer could argue her out of. Every inch gets sprayed for a reason. Socks off, rings off if you can manage it.

Bridal Tans — Extra Prep

When should I book a trial tan?

At least a month before the wedding, to test your shade before it matters. This is built into Bride & Glow, the $200 wedding package — a pre-wedding trial tan 30 days out, plus the final bridal tan 2 days out.

What shade should a bride choose?

Lighter than you'd think. Lighter shades photograph more natural and contrast better against a white dress than a deep tan does.

When should the final tan happen?

2–3 days before the wedding — enough time for the color to fully develop and any bronzer to rinse clean before photos.

What if I'm booking a whole bridal party?

The Posse Package covers bridal and group bookings — $70 per person, minimum 3 people.

Rinse Times & Aftercare

How long until I rinse?

It depends on the solution:
  • Classic solution: first rinse at 8–12 hours
  • Rapid solution: first rinse at 1–4 hours — the timing itself controls depth. 1 hour rinses lighter, 4 hours rinses darker.

What do I do before the first rinse?

Stay completely dry. No showering, working out, lotion, or liquid foundation until after your initial rinse. Avoid touching your skin while the tan develops — it can leave stained palms.

How do I do the first rinse?

Lukewarm water only, no soap. Use your hands, not a washcloth, to guide off any remaining bronzer.

How do I make it last?

Stay hydrated — the better hydrated your skin is, the longer the color holds. Use a moisturizer free of mineral oil and synthetic fragrance; a DHA tan-extending lotion is fine starting day 3. Avoid long pool or ocean sessions, long hot showers or baths, saunas, and heavy sweating — all of it shortens how long a tan lasts.

What Actually Matters

If you couldn't exfoliate the full 24 hours out

Don't stress over it. A same-day light exfoliation is still better than none — it just won't be quite as even as if you'd given it the full 24 hours.

If you're on blood thinners or certain medications

Or using new prescription actives like retinoids — check with your doctor first. Anything that changes how your skin turns over can change how evenly a tan develops.

If you have an active skin flare

Eczema, psoriasis, or broken skin won't take color evenly, and DHA can irritate skin that's already compromised. Wait until it clears, or patch test first.

DHA is regulated by the FDA as a cosmetic color additive. Exfoliation guidance is consistent with the American Academy of Dermatology's recommendations for safe at-home exfoliation.
