The Benefits of Spray Tanning (Written By Someone Who Clearly Has a Stake in This)

A sun tan happens when your skin produces melanin in response to UV radiation. UVA rays penetrate deep and degrade collagen — that's the primary mechanism behind photoaging. UVB rays burn the surface. Both are cumulative, and both increase your risk of skin cancer over time. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. UV exposure is the dominant risk factor.

A spray tan uses DHA — dihydroxyacetone — a sugar-derived compound that reacts with amino acids in the dead cells on the outermost layer of your skin to produce a brown pigment. If you need same-day results. A spray tan continues developing for 8–24 hours after application. What you see immediately after the appointment is lighter than your finished color. The real depth settles overnight. Book at least 24 hours before your event — 48 is better if you have the lead time. Same-day bookings are available if availability allows, but factor in the development window when you're planning your timeline.

If you waxed or shaved that morning. Hair removal opens the skin slightly. DHA can settle into those micro-openings unevenly. Give your skin a few hours to close back down before your appointment.

If you're on a prescription that affects skin cell turnover. Some retinoids and certain acne medications change how quickly your skin sheds dead cells. That affects how the DHA develops and how quickly the tan fades. Ask your prescriber if you're not sure — this isn't a generic disclaimer, it's a real variable.

I'd rather you know this now than be disappointed with the result later.
